Abiotic Factors in Ecosystems

By Jaden Reed

Flow Velocity in Aquatic Ecosytems

The speed at which the water in moving; determines which species can live in a certain area.

1. Time: melt water in the spring gives high flow rates, summer drought, low flow rates.

2. Depth: surface water may flow more slowly than that in the middle of the water column.

Position in the River: inside bend has shallow slower-moving water, outside bend has deeper, fast-moving water.

Measurement Method

1. Flow Meter: an instrument for measuring the rate of flow of water, gas, or fuel, especially through a pipe.

2. Impellers: simple mechanical devices.

3. Floats: used to measure flow velocity by measuring the time a floating object takes to travel a certain distance.

The rate at which light energy

is delivered to a unit of surface.
