What is The Shahadah?

A declaration of faith that you must say prior to becoming a Muslim.

What is the declaration?

"Ash-hadu an La Ilaha

Illallahu, wa Ash-hadu anna

Muhammadur RasulAllah."

I bear witness that there is no God but Allah,

and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

What does it mean?

When a Muslim recites this they proclaim:

  • That Allah is the only God, and that Muhammad is his prophet
  • That they personally accept this as true
  • That they will obey all the commitments of Islam in their life

Before Prayer

The area must be clean before prayer can commence

Often they will pray on mats.

How do they pray?

Before Muslims can pray they must wash themselves. This is called Wudu.

Pillar 2 - Salat

They must remove shoes before entering the mosque to ensure they're not bringing any dirt into prayer

They must face towards Mecca

The Ka'bah - first temple built to God.

Salat is the obligatory Muslim prayers, performed five times each day by Muslims

Prayer reminds Muslims that they are dependant on God.

They worship God as their creator.

How often do Muslims pray?

These are five rules or principles that a Muslim must follow.

The Five Pillars of Islam help a Muslim to worship Allah and guide his daily life.

Third Pillar - Zakat

The compulsory giving of a set proportion of one's wealth to charity

2.5% of one's wealth each year to benefit the poor.

Pillar 5 - Hajj

A pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must take part in once in their lifetime.

a journey of faith, often through difficult lands, to a place of spiritual significance.

What are the benefits of Zakat?

Freeing oneself from the love of money

Helping a person acknowledge that everything comes from God on loan and that we do not really own anything ourselves

Acknowledging that whether we are rich or poor is God's choice

Fourth Pillar - Sawm

Behaving honestly

Fasting - Muslims are required to fast during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

What does the fast include?

adult Muslims must give up the following things during the hours of daylight:

Food or drink of any sort

Smoking, including passive smoking

What are the reasons for this fast?

Appreciating God's gifts to us

Obeying God

Becoming spiritually stronger

Sharing the sufferings of the poor and developing sympathy for them

Learning self discipline

Realising the value of charity and generosity

Giving thanks for the Holy Qur'an, which was first revealed in the month of Ramadan

Sharing fellowship with other Muslims

Eating in Ramadan

Suhur - a large meal just before dawn.

When daylight is over, most Muslims will break or open the fast with dates or water, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad, before having a proper meal later.

Eid ul-Fitr

The month of Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid ul-Fitr.

This is marked by dressing up and visiting the mosque for prayer, and with visits to family and friends for celebratory meals.
