The Student Mentors Advising Rising Talent program is designed to ease the transition from high school to college both academically and socially for first-year students who self-identify as being of diverse and multicultural backgrounds by utilizing Peer Mentors. These Mentor are trained to provide guidance and support to make Elon University, which is a predominantly white institution (PWI), a welcoming and successful environment.

Program Outcomes

2013-2014

Provide first-year students of diverse and multicultural backgrounds a continuing orientation to university and community life

Empower students to develop healthy relationships with faculty and staff

Encourage students to identify positively with Elon University

Offer students a variety of support mechanisms to enhance their Elon experience

Support Mentees’ academic success, social integration, retention at Elon, increased confidence, higher GPAs, and greater intellectual growth.

Through mentoring, ensure that all SMART first-year students and Mentors reach the highest level of achievement possible while at Elon University.

* Training will be from Aug 17-23

- Move in will take place on the 16th and/or 17th

- Please arrive on campus at the designated time on the 17th

* Opening Day is Aug 23

* Multicultural Center Family reception will be Aug 23

* Smart Orientation will be Aug 24-25.

* August 28th is our first meeting

Established in 1994, the S.M.A.R.T Mentoring Program offers mentorship opportunities to first-year multicultural students. Upper class peer mentors assist students in making a smooth transition from high school to Elon University. Mentors are also charged with orientating the campus community on the complexity of being a student of diverse populations.

EXPECTATIONS

* Provide guidance & support to Mentees

- Keep track of your Mentee!

- Meeting regularly with them!

* Be a resource

- Encourage students to take advantage of services & organizations at Elon

* Attend meetings, events & trainings

- This is mandatory

* Commitment

- SMART is an important program that has a major impact on students... in other words, it is not a resume builder
