for leading the 1965 civil rights march,

Six hundred people crossed the
Edmund Pettus Bridge to start the
Selma to Montgomery march. State
troopers started to attack the protesters
and attempted to stop the march for
voting rights.
Amelia Boynton and some of the
other protesters were brutally beaten
and that day was known as the Bloody
Sunday. Amelia Boynton was also
recognized for being the first black
woman to run for congress in Albama.
