Money vs Moral

Themes From 'Runner' by Robert Newton

This is an especially important theme as Charlie debates whether breaking the law for Squizzy is worth the trouble it causes his friend and mother.

We learn that a bit of conning is worth it if it is for a good cause.

In the end, he helps out Nostrils using the money he has earned.

The author includes many temptations for Charlie to take the money to make him seem more noble for giving it to Nostrils.

Friendship

Charlie forms a friend, Nostrils, who stays with him even through injuries.

He has to choose whether to put his own interests over Nostril's.

Charlie decides to be a good friend to Nostrils and donates the money he won to a business for him.

Hard Work

Charlie trains hard for the race and is rewarded in the end.

He also doesn't take the easy way out by just running for Squizzy.

The author makes things as hard as possible for Charlie with many distractions in his life but he still manages to train himself.

Growing Up

After the death of Charlie's father, 'filling the shoes' is taken literally with Charlie growing into his father's boots.

Charlie has to start making decisions that effect the rest of the family.

It is set in first person to show the emotions he goes through in the process of getting over grief and making important decisions.
