The New Colossus

by Emma Lazarus

deeper meaning

literary devices

At first the poem seems to just be about giant metal structures but once you read it a few times you realize that its about the but it talks about how these giant structures symbolize power and freedom to these people

There are many literary devices used in the poem "The New Colossus"

  • There is metaphor in lines 4 and 5 where it says "whose flame is the imprisoned lightning," this is metaphor because it compares the bright light the torch produces to the power and light of lightning.
  • There is alliteration in line 3 and 4 where it says "sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand." this also creates rhythm from the initial "s" sound.
