The Aeneid Timeline

Aeneas Lands in Latium

King Latinus promises his daughter, Lavinia, to Aeneas. Turnus is in love with her and has the support of her mother and is taunted by Juno and the Fury Alecto. Turnus and Aeneas are now enemies. The war begins now.

Death of Pallas

Jounrey into the Underword

Pallas is the son of Evander. During the battle between the Trojans and the Italians, Pallas is fighting Lausus, an ally of Turnus. Turnus then turns to Pallas and declares he shall kill him. With one throw of his spear, Turnes fatally wounds Pallas. Aeneas is distraught over this loss and is ashamed because he promised Evander that he would protect Pallas.

Aeneas Flees Troy

In Book 2 of the Aeneid, Aeneas recalls how his home was seized. He also tells of how Hector and his mother Venus came to him, telling him to leave his home. He carries his father on his shoulders, leads his son by the hand, and his wife is following. Creusa, his wife, is lost along the way. She later appears to him and tells him of the land he is destined for.

Aeneas is guided through the Underworld and encounters many people from the past, present, and future. He is then greeted by his father in Elysium. His father reveals to Aeneas the people waiting on the future who happen to be the founders and rulers of Rome. He exits through the horn and ivory gates.

Aeneas Kills Turnus

Aeneas is Cast Ashore Carthage

Turnus challenges Aeneas to a single-combat fight to the death. Aeneas accepts this and they begin fighting. Once Aeneas overpowers Turnus and Turnus is begging for mercy he almost grants his wish. Then, Aeneas noticies Pallas' belt on Turnus and kills him with a fit of rage. The epic ends.

After setting sail for Italy, Aeneas encounters a storm. Aeolus has been persuaded by Juno to conjure the wind and throw the Trojans off course. When Neptune sees what has happened he is angry that someone would stir up the sea without his permission. He calms the water and drives off the wind and Aeneas arrives at Carthage.

Return to Sicily

After setting sail from Africa, another storm casts Aeneas off course and again lands on the island of Sicily. Here, Aeneas has games held in honor for his father. While here, Juno conspires with Iris and they manipulate some women into burning the Trojan ships. Jupiter overhears this and extinguishes the fire. Upon this, Aeneas is consuled by a general and his father, through a vision. He decided to built a village for thosse not fit for war.

Death of Dido

Dido is in love with Aeneas and sets up a hunting match for entertainment. During this time they end up in a cave where they are expected to consumate their marriage. It it here when Mercury comes to Aeneas and reminds him of his destiny. Aeneas leaves Dido to continue on his journey and Dido kills herself because she is so distrught.
