  • In 2004 a British company released Airider, a hovering vacuum cleaner that floats on a cushion of air, similar to a hovercraft. It has claimed to be light-weight and easier to maneuver.
  • In December 2009, Neato Robotics launched the world's first robotic vacuum cleaner which uses a rotating laser-based range-finder (a form of lidar) to scan and map its surrounding.
  • Braava is iRobot's Floor Mopping Robot, designed to work on all hard-surface floors. Braava uses disposable or microfiber cleaning cloths for damp and/or dry cleaning

Introduction

The Evolution of Vacuum Cleaners

Before the 20th century, women were expected to fulfill the duty of cleaning floors and carpets. The development of vacuum can be considered a wonderful invention as they facilitate floor cleaning and are more convenient. Some may argue that vacuum cleaners were invented in order to assist women in completing cleaning within a time efficient manner.

Carpet Sweeper

In 1957, Hoover introduced the Convertible Model 65 (the De Luxe 652 in the UK). This cleaner introduced what Hoover called 'Automatic Shift', a system whereby the tool converter plugged into the rear of the cleaner. The Convertible, or the Senior, in Britain, remains Hoover's worldwide best-selling cleaner. Although the domestic line was finally discontinued in 1993, a version called the Guardsman is still available in the commercial sector.

The Swedish Company Electrolux launched their Model V in 1921 with the innovation of being able to lie on the floor on to thin metal runners.

1959, the Model 3500 Floor Washer , hoovers wet/dry floor cleaner was introduced with an impressive tagline and ad saying its wonderful time. later became a commercial success and a very widely used technology these days.

Hoover launched the 'Powerdrive' self-propulsion system on the Hoover model 1170. The powerdrive feature was so efficient, the user could push the bulky machine forward with one finger, and the feature could also be disengaged with a button on the handgrip so the machine could travel easily from room to room with the motor turned off. This was also the first vacuum cleaner available commercially that used the self-propulsion system

John S. Thurman submitted a patent for Pneumatic Carpet Renovators which blur-dust into a receptable. This system powered by an internal combustion engine traveled to customer residence on a horn-drawn wagon as part of door to door cleaning service.

Carpet Sweeper was invented by Daniel Hess that gathered dust with the rotating brush and a billows for generating suction.

Portable Electric Vacuum Cleaner

Vorwerk Vacuum Cleaners.

Roomba

Dial-A-Matic

German Company Vorwerk started marketing vacuum cleaners of their own design which they sold through direct sales.

In 1907, Department store janitor Jhames Mirray Spangler invented the 1st portable electric vacuum cleaner which solved

Electrolux Trilobite - It was the world's first commercially available autonomous vacuum cleaner It has the ability to map rooms and avoid obstacles by using ultrasonic sensors.

1963 saw the introduction of the Dial-A-Matic in the US . This was the first-ever clean-air upright cleaner. The clean-air principle is similar to the flow of air through a cylinder/canister cleaner. Rather than the dirt passing directly through the suction fan and being blown into the bag, it passes through the bag first, leaving only clean air to pass through the fan. Also, the machine was constructed out of hard plastic.

  • first model to use suction.
  • developed by a British engineer Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901
  • powered by internal combustion engine made up of piston pump
  • did not contain any brush

Roomba is a series of autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners sold by iRobot. Introduced in September 2002,[1] Roomba features a set of basic sensors that enable it to perform its tasks.

Fun Fact

Till 1930's vacuum cleaner was a luxury .

Fun Fact

Hoover became a leading electronics manufacturer from leather good manufacturer by producing portable vacuum cleaner

Fun Fact

– Dial-A-MAtic was sold in Australia as the Dynamatic, and in Britain as the Convertible because of their cultural notions.
