Part 2

pH determines the acidity of the water. If the pH is low then the water is very acidic. You should not drink water with a low pH.

Water quality

Nitrates and Phosphates are chemical compounds that maintains the growth of plants. When these chemicals are released from septic tanks, runoff mixed with from fertilizers, and more. It runs into the water and increase growth of plants. When the plants die, dissolved oxygen levels decrease, pH qualities are lowered and the water is unsafe to drink.

White Oak's Estuary

Upwelling and downwelling are important because it brings up sediment rich water up to the top and promotes aquatic plant growth and supports an healthy marine ecosystem.

White Oak's Estuary is called a Tidal Estuary.

Bogue Sound

Temperature for water should really gets its heat from the sun. The temperature can also be changed naturally by other water being put into the water source. (Ex: Runoff) It should be at the temperature where it does not scald you if you try to drink nor should it try to freeze you.

That means that it is an slightly closed inlet with multiple streams flowing in brackish water.

Dissolved oxygen can also determine the temperature. If it is low then the temperature is increased.

Part:1

Bogue Sound is a sound that empties out the White Oak river. It is located in North Carolina.

All about White oak

Please consider the following...

People love to fish for all sorts of delicious sea creatures, do some birdwatching, do some recreational boating and hiking, or if you're interested in ecology like me you would love to take water samples of the water and try to catch a view of endangered species before they are gone.

A Sound is a fancy word for a deep ocean inlet larger than a bay, a deeper Seaway, or a larger fjord.

The White oak river basin is located down in the corner of North Carolina. It is sandwiched between the Cape fear and Neuse river basins.

The white oak is a blackwater river! Meaning that a lot of nitrates and phosphates are in the water. As plants die tannin acid leaks into the water making look dark and also lowering the pH, making it very acidic.

The White Oak River Basin

Fun fact: This estuary is more of a mixture of a salt marsh and Freshwater marsh. The majority of it is salt marsh.

A major City in the basin is the City of Jacksonville.

By: Athena Ward

The major river of the White Oak river basin is the White Oak River. Yes I know it sounds so obvious right?

Turbidity is the cloudiness of the water. If the water is very cloudy that means that the water could be very dirty and unhealthy.

A bio-indicator is a living organism. You don't want to drink animals or plants do you? So it is important that the water quality is safe.

Point and non-point source pollution

The difference between point and non-point source pollution is that with a point source pollution you can pinpoint where the pollution is coming from. Like if a chemical leaked into the river, I can tell that it came from a industrial company nearby. If it is a non-point source I can't exactly tell where the pollution is coming from.

It can affect the White Oak basin because people need to drink clean water. Also there is a lot of tourism involving going in the water. So if a chemical leak started and the people didn't know where it came from... that would be very bad for business.

Part 3

How to clean Water...

Flocculation is the process of when a solution is inserted into water to clear the water of dirt and materials by clumping the dirt into clods and letting it sink down. Allowing the turbidity to become clearer and safer to drink. Many waste water plants use this method to clean water.

Active carbon absorption is when activated carbon is used to cleanse water. As the water goes through the carbon filters the impurities is absorbed by the carbon by a process called chemical attraction.

Aeration is the process of pumping air into water to rid of unwanted gases and odor to improve taste.

Keeping the water safe...

The EPA (environmental protection agency) makes sure that the water quality is safe for animals and the environment. They help reduce pollution and set programs.

The Clean Water act was passed in 1972 and it ensured that humans had clean water to drink and swim in.

The Safe Drinking act was passed in 1974 and it ensured that the drinking water met the requirements before people can drink.

Unused Vocabulary

salinity: the measurement of how salt is in the water.

Desalination: is when you take the salt out of the water.
