The government of the state government of Oaxaca and the federal government have not made any clear efforts to preserve their unique heritage, as conservatione fforts have been pointed towards preserving the land and nature throughout the area.

The patron saint is very important to them, as are the spirits of caves, springs, and hills

The Mazatec are generally agricultural, eating beans, chili, and squash
