PONS!

The Pons is a portion of the hindbrain that connects the cortex with the medulla. It also serves as a communications and coordination center between the two hemispheres of the brain. As a part of the brainstem, the pons helps in the transferring of messages between various parts of the brain and the spinal cord.

What Would Happen If Your PONS WAS DAMAGED!

Without the Pons, the brain would not be able to function because messages would not be able to be transmitted,or passed along.Damage to the Pons will result in a range of effects on sleep. For example, damage to certain parts of the Pons can put a person into a semi-permanent sleep-like state.

How do other structures help your PONS?

How do you measure your pons?

Othe structures need the Pons,Pons dont need them. For example the cortex and the cerebellum relays on the Pons to send messages between each other.

The pons in humans measures about 2.5 cm or 1 inch in length. Most of it appears as a broad anterior bulge rostral to the medulla. It consists mainly of two pairs of thick stalks called cerebellar peduncles. They connect the cerebellum to the pons and midbrain.

Where is Pons Located? & What does the Pons look like?

The Pons is located in an area of the hindbrain that sits directly above the medulla.

What is near your pons?

  • Midbrain
  • Medulla oblongata
  • Fourth ventricle

Major functions of the Pons

The Pons connects upper and lower parts of the brain. The brainstem has influence over several automatic basic life functions.

  • Arousal
  • Controlling Autonomic Functions
  • Relaying Sensory Information Between the Cerebrum and Cerebellum
  • Sleep
