The Ant and the

Grasshopper

by Luli Gray

When Ant spies a carefree Grasshopper playing a fiddle outside on the lawn, Ant immediately harrumphs at the insect's foolishness and continues to go about his very serious business of gathering and counting his food for the winter. But Ant finds Grasshopper's music and whimsy more catchy than he'd like, and soon he's distracted by his own rhyming and doodling! When the harsh winter hits and Ant finds Grasshopper cold and hungry in the snow, he can't help but bring him inside. Only after opening his home to Grasshopper does Ant realize that music, dancing, and laughter have their place in his life, too.

Noam Friedlander examines Perry's phenomenal rise, her music and videos, her fantastical retro-chic style, and key events in Perry's personal life--including her marriage to (and divorce from) comedian Russell Brand.

Awe-inspiring and astounding, the American alligator is the reptile that visitors to and natives of the southeastern United States love to fear. Lockwood known for his marvelous photos of Southern swamps and their inhabitants (and voted a Louisiana Legend by Louisiana Public Broadcasting in 2000), toured the Gulf Coast, primarily of Louisiana and Florida, to capture the American alligator in all its prehistoric glory.

Number the Stars

by Lois Lowry

Middle school teacher Eva Marie Olinski returns to teaching after an accident left her paraplegic. She chooses four of her sixth-grade students (Ethan, Noah, Nadia, and Julian), who form a group they call "The Souls," to represent her class in the Academic Bowl competition.

As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.
