The book starts off with the main character, Jacob Portman, and his nine peculiar friends in the middle of the sea near the peculiar children's home on the island of Cairnholm, Wales in the year 1940. They are running away from the wights that had captured them previously in the first book of the series. While they were captured, the children's caretaker, Miss Peregrine, was poisoned and is stuck in bird form, which isn't good for a ymbryne. In this story, the children will have to travel to peculiar capital of the world-London, England- in order to save Miss Peregrine before it's too late. Along the way, they will have to avoid being captured again by the wights, World War II bombings, and meet peculiar children and animals from other time loops. Just when the children think they have saved Miss Peregrine, something life changing happens, and they wonder if they will ever have their beloved Miss Peregrine back.
I chose 'Hollow City' because I read the first book in the trilogy, ('Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children') and my friend recommended me to read it.
Adventure: In 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children', Jacob went on an adventure to an unknown world to find children that his grandfather told him about when Jacob was a young child, and that adventure continues in 'Hollow City' in the city of London, as the peculiar children try to find another ymbryne to save Miss Peregrine.
Trust: In Hollow City, Jacob must trust Emma when she says that Miss Peregrine will be saved from being stuck in bird form. The peculiar children all trust one another, which is how they are so close and can tell each other anything.
Emma Bloom: A peculiar child who has the ability to produce fire in her hands.
Jacob Portman: A peculiar child who has the ability to see hollowgasts. By the end of the book, Jacob realizes that he is able to talk to and control the hollowgasts.
Time loops: areas that allow peculiars to transport themselves from one time period to another
Hollowgast: creature that eats peculiar children; has tentacles; invisible to everybody except for a few peculiars (like Jacob)
Wight: the "upgraded" form of a hollowgast after it has eaten enough peculiars; has milky white eyes and is in human form
Ymbryne: a female who can manipulate time and take the form of a bird; takes care of her peculiar children from the world's dangers (Miss Peregrine)
*Hollow City features many vintage photographs that have to do with the plot of the book*
I gave this book an eight because I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book in the series, but I still thought it had an interesting plot. I would recommend it to anyone who likes history, because much of this book revolves around World War Two.
Miss Peregrine: A ymbryne who is stuck in bird form from the encounter with the wights in the first book when they captured her and poisoned her.
