The people who didn't/don't like the bill/law are business owners who don't want competitors.
The idea of this law is to make a national law to stop big trust to form and have complete control over the market. Individual states already had similar law's, but there was non on the national level. The Google definition from 10-1-13 on antitrust was "of or relating to legislation preventing or controlling trusts or other monopolies, with the intention of promoting competition in business"
The house passed the bill unanimous with 242 representatives in the House on June 20, 1890, and in the Senate 51representatives voted for the bill and only 1 did not, on April 8, 1890. Benjamin Harrison was the president that signed the bill July 2, 1890.
This act was need to stop the Standard Oil trust of January 2, 1882. This company was gaining a monopoly over oil consumers. this company was also needed to stop inter state trust. If this law did not exist today Microsoft could have a monopoly over the pc industry.
John Sherman proposed the antitrust act. He was a republican senator out of Ohio. At this time he was on the Finance committee.
