Why Is The Lake Pink?

The bacteria in Lake Hillier live in the salt crusts. Micro-algae called Dynallella salina produces Carotenoids (red pigments) within the cellular membrane.

  • Pink lake of Quairading, Austrailia: Quairading Pink Lake is located 11 km (7 mi) east of Quairading. At certain times of the year, one side of the lake becomes dark pink, while the other side remains light pink color.

The man who discovered it was named Captain Mathew Flinders. The lake was observed by him for a high peak. He named it Flinders Peak. Later on he collected the water and found out it was saline in nature.

There is no scope of organism that lives in the lake. (too much salt) But there is one thing that needs sulfur, an anaerobic prehistoric organism which is a pink photosynthetic bacterium its transforms sunlight into energy.

Where Is It Located?

Lake Hillier is located right next to the Pacific Ocean, right on the edge of Recherche Archipelago's largest island in Australia. Lake Hillier is surrounded by eucalyptus and paperback trees.

Austraila Hutt Lagoon is a pink lake, a salt lake with a red or pink hue due to the presence of the carotenoid-producing algae Dunaliella salina.
