Macbeth's universe

His world becomes one without hope, moral order or religious significance.

Life is no more that "a tale told by an idiot"

Malcolm, Macduff and Allies' universe

They see meaning and value in human life.

"Macbeth's cause is diseased and Malcolm is presented as the doctor who will heal Scotland and restore order." (Murphy, p.184)

Restoration of Order

Supernatural aid is being invoked:

"the powers above put on their instruments"

Birnam woods of Dunsinane: nature overturning anti-nature.

"Macbeth shall never vanquished be until

Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill

Shall come against him."

Three types of order:

General Vision and Viewpoint: Order

Health and Disease

1. Within the universe.

2. Within society.

3. Within the human being.

These are symbols are moral good and evil.

"If thou couldst, doctor, cast/The water of my land, find her disease,/And purge it to...pristine health."

At Macbeth's hands, "good men's lives expire..."

Edward the Confessor's: diseased souls

"presently amend"

  • Tragic drama presents the worst that human beings are capable of and the worst that can happen to human beings.

Macbeth unsettles the NATURAL ORDER:

  • Contemplating Duncan's murder: Macbeth's heart beats violently at his ribs "against the use of nature."
  • The murder: "Nature seems dead"., "unnatural the deed that's done."
  • Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking: "great perturbation of nature", "unnatural deeds do breed unnatural troubles."
