After traveling with the carnival, he also worked as a farmer, engineer, construction worker, truck driver, and sailor before he decided to become a writer.
Hatchet tells the story of Brian, a boy who becomes stranded alone in the Canadian wilderness. He must learn how to survive without any guidance, and make it through the challenging elements.
Gary Paulsen has published over 175 books, and 200 articles. Popular titles include: Dogsong, Soldier's Heart, and The Island.
Hatchet won a Newbery Honor Award, and was the winner of the 1990 William Allen White Children's Book Award.
