The River was written in 2003 and remains with a very strong implied message to this day.

The author was 47 years of age, had darker skin (Jamaican) and had moved to the UK at the age of 23. She had a life already with discrimination and hardship before writing this poem.

The author having had a life with tough times allowed her to express this well in the poem. We all have rough times at points in our lives and we can relate to the poem because of the way she writes it so simply about a common theme.
