Constitutional Law

Constitutional law deals with the interpretation and implementation of the United States Constitution.

Constitutional law also deals with some of the fundamental relationships within our society. This includes relationships among the states, the states and the federal government, the three branches (executive, legislative, judicial) of the federal government, and the rights of the individual in relation to both federal and state government.

Statutory Law

An act of a legislature that declares, or commands something; a specific law, expressed in writing.

Statutes set forth general ideas of laws that courts apply to specific situations. A statute may deny a certain act, direct a certain act, make a declaration, or set forth ways to aid society.

Case Law

Case law is the set of reported judicial decisions of selected appellate courts and other courts of first instance which make new interpretations of the law and, therefore, can be cited as precedents in a process known as stare decisis.

Criminal Law

Criminal Law is the body of law that relates to crime. It might be defined as the body of rules that defines conduct that is not allowed because it is held to threaten, harm or endanger the safety and welfare of people, and that sets out the punishment to be imposed on people who do not obey these laws

Civil Law

The branch of law dealing with disputes between individuals or organizations, in which compensation may be awarded to the victim.

Administrative Law

The body of law that governs the activities of administrative agencies of government. Government agency action can include rulemaking, adjudication, or the enforcement of a specific regulatory agenda.

Substantive Law

The statutory or written law that defines rights and duties, such as crimes and punishments (in the criminal law), civil rights and responsibilities in civil law. It is codified in legislated statutes or can be enacted through the initiative process.

Procedural Law

Combines the rules by which a court hears and determines what happens in civil lawsuit, criminal or administrative proceedings. The rules are designed to ensure a fair and consistent application of due process (in the U.S.) or fundamental justice (in other common law countries) to all cases that come before a court.
