Orchestra or Solo?

Composer Who Have Written For the Alto Saxophone

By Emma and Rebecca

Alto Saxophone in an orchestra:

The saxophone was at first used for military band use, but was later introduced to symphonies and orchestras. It is said that the saxophone is used to blend the two sections of lower instruments and higher instruments in an orchestra. Solos are less popular, but composers have still made saxophone solos.

Charlie Parker wrote many solos for the alto saxophone, where as Phillip Glass and Claude Debussy wrote for more orchestral pieces.

Many composers have featured an alto saxophone in their orchestra. Claude Debussy has written for his piece Rhapsody. Phillip Glass has composed a Concerto for Saxophone Quartet. Charlie Parker is also an alto composer, and composed many jazz songs.

Physical Demands

The alto saxophone has one very delicate feature: the reed. The reed is a thin wooden piece that is used to make a sound, and needs to be handled carefully. If the reed becomes chipped, it becomes useless. The rest of the saxophone is kept in 3 pieces in it's case, to keep it safe when not being used. With good care, the saxophone can last a lot longer, and will sound a lot better!

Insruments Helping Your Health

To play an instrument, you surprisingly have to be fit and healthy. When you are playing a saxophone, let's say for a performance, you will be blowing air for a long period of time. It would be like blowing up tons of balloons in

a row. You will get very winded,

and it's good to have a healthy

lung capacity so you can handle

it easier. This way, you can last

the whole performance!

While you need good health to play an instrument, it is also said that playing instruments improves your health. It is said to improve immunity, lowers stress, reduces blood pressure, has pain relief, and even helps headaches!

The saxophone has also been used to make renditions of popular songs. This adds interest to younger players, and is also fun to do!

The alto saxophone is a woodwind instrument, made almost completely out of metal. It's range of sounds is low Eb to high F#, and composes of many buttons to make different sounds. To make the initial sound, you have to blow air into the wooden reed and mouthpiece at the top.
