The Biome of Hawaii

By Dalton Reidhead

Hawaii is the newest of the 50 U.S. states , and is the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands.

Hawaii’s diverse scenery, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches and oceanic surrounding, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologists alike.

The state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which comprises hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles .

Here is a map of the islands of Hawaii.

Problems in Hawaii

Volcanic Air Pollution

Noxious sulfur dioxide gas and other pollutants emitted from Kilauea Volcano on the Island of Hawai`i react with oxygen and moisture to produce volcanic smog and acid rain. Smog poses a health hazard by aggravating respiratory ailments, and acid rain damages crops and can leach lead into household water supplies.
