The lifetime of Elizabeth was filled with danger. As a resultb, most people were tamed and afraid. Crimes were low in number.

  • Different types of torture were used depending on the victims crime and social statues. Punishments were violent, cruel, and vile.
  • There were many methods of torture which were practiced during the Elizabethan Era. Torture in the 1500's-1600's was systematic, cruel and inflicted physical and mental suffering. Devices and tools were used to inflict unbearable agony on a victim.

The public executions and tortures were always done at Tower Hill for hundreds to see. Some of the prisoners who were killed by public executions on Tower Hill suffered the most atrocious and painful deaths.

Queen Ann Boleyn

  • A machine consisting of a rectangular wooden frame. A roller was at each end. Victims feet were tied at the bottom and wrist tied to the top. The rollers at either end of the frame were turned, pulling the body in opposite directions. Victims got stretched causing pain.
  • A rope was attached to each leg from the foot to the knee, and around each arm from the wrist to the elbow.The ropes were tied to bars which were tied to horses. Horses would slowly walk opposite sides. Hot lead, water or oil would be poured on the victim.
  • A way to prove justice and obtain testimonies. It was also used to spill out confessions from suspects for use in legal trials

The Scavengers Daughter

  • Consists of a hoop of iron with a hinge in the middle.
  • Victim was forced to crouch on one half of the hoop while the other half was placed over his back
  • Torture would use a screw to tighten the hinge, crushing the victems further into his crouch.
  • Eventually, ribs/breastbone would crack and the spine could be dislocated.
