Charlie has a difficult time recovering from his LSD trip because he finds it hard to stabilize his mind and focus on one thing, which is something that he admits causes him difficulty even on good days.

The state of mind Charlie experiences after using all these drugs show what's happening in Charlie's brain on a daily basis.

Charlie often uses illicit substances to come to terms with the many secrets he holds.

"After thirty minutes, the room started to slip away from me. I was talking one of the girls with the belly button ring, and she seemed like she was in a movie. I started blinking a lot and looking around, and the music sounded heavy like water."

"Things were worse an hour ago, and I was looking at this tree but it was a dragon and then a tree, and I remembered that one nice pretty weather day when I was part of the air"

As Charlie begins to bond with Sam and Charlie more, he is introduced to alcohol, marijuana and LSD.

Charlie is a freshman starting his first day of high school who copes the death of his best friend and his aunt. Charlie is a wallflower meaning he's an introvert. He meets 2 seniors, Sam and Patrick who guide him through highschool and Charlie comes out of his shell and experiences things he thought never would.
