Dutch Elm Disease

Action

Why should you care?

I'm going to make a flyer and post them around the school/community. That would be in places like the library, kroger, target, etc.

Elms used to lines all the streets in America. But now, thanks to the dutch elm disease, they are scarce. Elms, like all other trees, use their leaves to create oxygen for us to breathe. One of the first things to be affected by the disease are the leaves. If trees, like elms, keep dieing, we will have less and less oxygen. And without oxygen, we die. Ever since the first tree was infected, its been spreading more and more.

BACKGROUND

INFO

The dutch elm disease is caused when a fungus (Ceratocystis ulmi or Ophiostoma ulmi), which is spread by the elm bark beetle, invades the elms water transporting vessel. The funghi puts toxins into the water, which causes the trees defense system to stop the flow of water. This causes the tree to wilt and die. The disease was thought to have been brought over around 1920 with the elm bark beetle on a log shipment from the Netherlands. The disease, since then, has killed over 77 million elms.

Whats being done?

There are many websites and forums out there dedicated to informing people about tree diseases. Some landscaping companies offer treatments to specifically to attack the DED fungus. There are a group of scientists that are working on a treatment that stimulates the trees immune system to attack the fungus on its own.
