-2,300 overall inmates

-about 50 are maximum security in SHU (special housing units)

-the facility is medium security

-Gowanda encourages family contact, belief that its part of the healing process

-Gowanda is the second largest correctional facility in NY state

-one vocational program that is interesting is called "C SET-TV" and teaches inmates on behind the scenes work in video production

HISTORY

-started out as Gowanda State Hospital in 1894

-it housed the mentally insane

-first building built is still used by Collins State Correctional Facility today

-it was converted to a prison in 1994

-started with a population of 750 inmates

-now houses 2,300 inmates

Treatment Programs

Housing Units

-Gowanda's entire 2,300 inmate population participate in the "Lifestyles" program, which creates mutual understanding of other inmate and is therapeutic

-"VAST" which are vocational programs are optional for inmates that meet requirements and are not a security risk

-DWI programs are in place to help inmates who have DWI's get out in there typical two years instead of three, if refused to be taken or failed inmates must stay in the facility for three years due to the lack of receiving "good-time"

-"Amer-I-Can" program are used to help substance abuse, aggression management, educational deficiencies and a better undestanding of why an inmate is incarcerated

-single story building with 48 maximum security cells

-the A and B buildings are long narrow structures that are both 6 stories high and house multiple inmate rooms using a dormitory floor plan

- there is 33cafeterias over all and in each building,but one main cafeteria makes the food and transports it to the other buildings sing underground tunnels from 1957 that was used to transport inmates, this in one fourstory building also housing offices and classrooms.

-near the A andB buildings to the east is a one story building shaped like a cross from over head, it contains laundry classrooms, inmate commissary and the state shop and maintenance areas

-the C and D buildings are also like the A and B buildings but are 3 stories high and isseparated by another set of fences and houses special types of inmates such as sex offenders etc. they hold 750 inmates each.

-there is one other 1 story building which holds a staff cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium and classrooms
