U.S ECONOMY IN 1600's

GDP continued

Facts

The inflation was minimal at that time. The deflation was not recorded but it is estimated that it was very rare due to the small amounts of industries and other methods of trade. Also at that time, actual notes and coins were probably hard to come by.

They grew crops such as pumpkin, squash, beans and corn. They also grew lots of tobacco and hemp. The major industries of that time were lumber, shipbuilding, trading and slave labor.

The national debt of the US during the 1600s was not recorded to an accurate state. One expense that was known by the nation was slave trading. The African American race had the highest unemployment rate in America.

Women and girls wove, sewed and picked berries. While men engaged in wrestling, hunting and fishing. The women were out numbered six to one. The life expectancy was 35, which left many families broken. They built small wooden or brick cottages. The land was bad and there were many diseases.

Families grew in the colonies. Many families had multi-purpose rooms. For example the pull out beds were used in the parlor. Their agriculture was very sustainable. People of the 1600s were very concerned with witchcraft and if you were thought to be a witch you were burned at the stake, hung or drowned.

If you lived in the south you most likely lived in an isolated farmland while if you lived in New England you most likely lived in colonized villages. Church was a common meeting place with many people going to service twice a day.

The poor were divided into three types by the government. The helpless poor which included the old, sick, disabled, and children. They were given the right to beg. Next were the able-bodied poor; they were people who could work and wanted to work. They got payed out of the poor rate. The third group is the most dangerous. They were called Rouges and Vagabonds. They were people who roamed the colonies begging and stealing.
