The National flood insurance program was created to encourage property owners to take responsibly for their financial future in the event of a flood, this was so residence would not rely on the governments assistance.
- Initial damaged was 35 million
- Homes damaged, LIVES LOST!
- Global warming can cause flooding because of climate change, melting of the snow cause water levels to rise
- Economic impacts were estimated to be as high as 1.5 billion
- Cannot afford to repair or buy new home(s)
- 100,000 residents (1/3 of Winnipeg) were evacuated form their homes.
Government Preparations
to Deal with extreme weather events
- Flood controls were built after the devastating flood of 1950, which flooded the Red River Valley. Construction of the Red River Floodway was completed in 1968.
- Additional flood control improvements, including an expansion of the floodway, were made after the Flood of the Century in 1997.
- Flood protection work has prevented property damage and reduced the potential impact of flooding on families and communities.
