Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID, is a mental disorder in which a person displays at least two different alternate personalities or "alters" that control a person's behavior.
Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness involving chronic psychosis, characterized mainly by hearing or seeing things that aren't real (hallucinations) and thinking or believing things with no basis in reality (delusions).
The first case of DID was thought to be described by Paracelsus in 1646.
The causes of DID are widely debated. There are several theories as to why DID is formed.
1. That DID is a reaction to trauma.
During the 19th and early 20th century, many hypnotists reported completely different people emerging throughout hypnosis. They documented how two different minds worked in the same body.
2. That DID is produced iatrogenically by inappropriate psycho therapeutic techniques.
3. If a person is under extreme stress, they may create different personalities, to better handle the stress.
To this day, DID is widely controversial and many psychologists believe it is due to other underlying diagnoses.

How it affects a person's daily life
Each alter takes over the persons life at some point.
Because oftentimes the symptoms of dissociative disorders occur with other disorders, such as anxiety and depression, dissociative disorder may be treated using the same drugs prescribed for those disorders. A person in treatment for a dissociative disorder might benefit from antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication.
Each alter might have distinct traits, personal history, and way of thinking about and relating to his or her surroundings. An alter might even be of a different gender, have his or her own name, and have distinct mannerisms or preferences.
This can create a chaotic life and cause problems in work and social situations.
