Scavenger by David Morrell summary

Ray makes a racist comment towards Derrick, and they fight. Ray kills Derrick. Derrick was Viv's husband, and she's determined to get revenge on Ray. They find a lake, but it's filled with snakes. Viv points out that the lake wasn't actually a lake; it was too perfectly shaped. So they tried draining the lake; Viv fell in the water and drowned. Meanwhile, Frank finds out that Amanda's location is an abandoned town called Avalon in Wyoming. He finds Amanda and they're happily reunited. But they still have to find the Sepulcher of Worldly Desires; the hints tell them to go to the mine.

Scavenger

As they enter the mine, Ray finds two lanterns and tries to light them, but Frank warns they might explode. As they go further in the mine, the roof collapses killing Ray. The duo soon finds the Sepulcher of Worldly Desires; it's the whole town of Avalon preserved and staged to form each unspeakable sin.

Goal

They find a wall of rocks, so they use the lanterns as bombs, and the force takes the rocks down. They enter a camera room, and find the Game Master on a raised platform. His sister, Karen, tries to protect her brother, but dies trying. Frank gets to the Game Master who's Johnathon Creed, and Johnathon tells Frank to kill him; Frank refuses, and Jonathon starts a time-bomb.

Meanwhile, Frank and officer Ortega search for Amanda. They find a woman, Professor Graham, who might know something. Earlier, Frank found something about a Sepulcher of Worldly Desires and Graham knows most about it. Later, Frank finds a BlackBerry that a woman he saw at the conference dropped, and finds it has a video of a woman exploding, and something about a game called Scavenger. Officer Ortega dies after falling through the floor. Frank finds out a tracking device was put in his arm.

Frank and Amanda run through the tunnel that leads outside and they make it. Jonathon said he gave them 60 seconds, but actually it was 2 minutes. The explosion destroys the camera room and Jonathon.

Start

Amanda wakes in an unfamiliar place, and she finds four other people; Bethany, Derrick, Viv, and Ray. There in a house, and the door that leads outside is electrified. They all find out they each have a purpose there, and they learn about each other from a voice in a speaker. The voice turns the electricity off and commands them to go outside or he'll make the house explode.

Frank Balenger and his girlfriend Amanda go to a conference about time-capsules; the food they were served was drugged. Frank wakes up near a construction sight and doesn't know where Amanda is.

Amanda and the others depart, and are now wearing clothes the voice told them to, along with GPS devices. Bethany gets paranoid when they enter a large gulley, and tries to make a run for it. She explodes into pieces. The others all horrified, continue there journey as the voice gives them instructions and hidden hints. None of them have drank or ate anything in days. The voice tells them to call him the Game Master, and he tells them they have 40 hours to win the game.
