Word Walls for ELL Students

Label the Picture with the English Words

Purpose

As described in our text, it can be best to associate new words by associating them to pictures (Rasinski & Padak, 2013, pg. 151).

This can be especially helpful when the pupils are English Language Learners (ELLs).

These item names, although new to the ELL, will be easily recognizable to them.

Conclusion

By finding a commonality with the ELL, they can begin to learn English and start the process of being an even playing field as their native English speaking classmates.

The use of pictures is one way to reach them in a universal manner.

Depending upon the grade level and the base from which to work from, an educator will be able to adjust and help meet the student at their level.

For our example, we will pretend the ELL has no real basic word knowledge in English. The following slides will show how we will aid the pupil in learning basic words in English.

By labeling a common object with the names the ELL already knows, we can connect the English words to these items more easily.
