Mixtures

Mixtures are grouped based on their appearance into 3

categories.

  • Mechanical Mixtures
  • Suspensions
  • Solutions

Solutions can be liquids, gases or solids.

Brass is a solution of copper and zinc.

Steel is a solution of iron, oxygen, and carbon.

HW

  • Read pages 144-147
  • Questions 1-3

Since salt water is a mixture, there is no chemical bonding and the properties of water and salt remain seperate. One example is the boiling points.

Mixtures are substances held together by physical forces, not chemical.

This means that an element or compounds fundamental chemical structure is unchanged when it is added to a mixture.

The majority of substances that surround us in our daily lives come in the form of mixtures.

Mechanical Mixtures

A mixture where 2 or more

different parts can be seen

with the unaided eye.

Suspensions

  • A heterogenous mixture in which clumps of solid or droplets of a liquid are scattered throughout a liquid or gas.
  • If left alone, the varying parts of a suspension may seperate into layers.

Solutions

  • A mixture that appears to be only one substance
  • These mixtures blend so well together that the particles of one solution fills in spaces between the particles of the other substance(s)
