Eco-zone system Interactions & Environmental problems

Human interaction in the Eco-zone has to do with, forest, mining, hydroelectric generation and recreational resources, all important sectors within the Canadian economy.

The majour environmental threats to the boreal shield are insects and forest fires. Mostly caused my human interactions with the shield

Lake Huron, Lake Winnipeg, Lake Superior, Lake Nipigon and Lac St.Jean. Several of the large rivers in the Boreal Shield are: Nelson River, Churchill River, Rupert River, and the St.Lawrence River

drainage basins are Atlantic and Hudson bay drainage basins

Animals

The abundance of water in the Boreal shield attracts many aquatic birds such as....

-Ducks, Loons, Geese, and Swans

Mammals that inhabit the shield consist of....

-Woodland caribou, Moose, Snowshoe hare, Lynx, and humpback whales.

Soils and Vegetation

Location

The forest covers 75% of the ecozone

mostly coniferous trees

the soil is acidic, poor, and swampy

there is leaching that occurs

Balsam fir, whit spruce, and mountain maple

Absolute Location: 58N-48N and 110W-52W

Realative Location: just of Alberta and goes into Newfoundland north of the mixwood plains

Landforms

- most commonly plains and low hills

- its the largest canadian ecozone covering 1.8 million km2

- covers many bodies of water such as lake Huron, Superior, and Winnipeg

- it only holds 10% of Cannada's population
