After King Hygelac dies followed by Heardred, Beowulf becomes King of Geatland.
Beowulf and his men fight Grendel in the mead hall. Beowulf rips off Grendel's arm from the shoulder. Bleeding profusely he runs off toward his home and dies there. His arm is used as a trophy in the mead hall.
Heorot is a mead hall created by Hrothgar and is a place for his warriors to feast and drink. Grendel, a descendent from Cain, wanted to enjoy the nightly entertainment. He was angered by the songs about God's creations. He killed 30 men after they had fallen asleep and would attack the Danes for 12 years.
During the battle with the dragon, Beowulf received a venomous bite in the neck. He succumbs to his wound. He spends his last breaths with Wigalf and gives him his wishes for what he wants to be done to his body. His pyre is built to Beowulf's liking, his body is placed in it, and then burned.
