Basically the Delian league was formed to make Persia pay form what they have done.

What was its purpose?

  • The Delian league was formed to help Greece in the Peloponnesian war. This war was a major turning point for Greece. They were not strong enough under Alexander the Great, so they turned to Athens to form the Delian League.
  • The League and the power it gave Athens over the rest of Greece were one of the major reasons for the Peloponnesian War against Sparta and its allies.

The End of the League

  • The Delian League came to an end after Sparta and Athens were captured in 404 B.C. They had fought many wars called campaigns against the Persians.
  • Some ancient historians claim that a peace treaty, the Peace of Callias, was agreed to cement the final end of the Greco-Persian Wars. Others claim that a permanent peace was made with the Persians and the Leagues reason for existing was no longer valid, but by then most of the alliances had already lost autonomy to Athens.

Sicilian Expedition

The Sicilian Expedition was an Athenian military expedition to Sicily. The expedition was a risk. Athens swelled a lightweight force of 20 ships into a massive armada. The general, Nicias, was supposed to take a small fleet there, but he asked for a bigger one to show that this expidition would be impossible to accomplish. If something went wrong, Athens would be defenseless. It became a disaster.

What is it?

The First Athenian

Alliance

The Delian league was formed in 478 B.C. It was an alliance of coastal and Agean city-states against Persians at a time when Greece was threatened by Persia. Its goal was to make Persia pay and to free the Greeks under Persian dominion. It later became the Athenian empire that opposed Spartan allies in the Peloponnesian war. Strength is what the poleis had been seeking when they turned to Athens to form the Delian League.
