Restorative Justice/ Conflict Resolution

The AFSC is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service. Our work is based on the principles of the Religious Society of Friends, the belief in the worth of every person, and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.

Pop Quiz: Restorative or nah?

Through Peer Mediation

Offense: Two students are joning in class during a lesson. The joning escalates to a physical altercation that has be broken up by a school resource officer.

Skills/ Training

A. After threatening suspension, the students involved have separate conversations about what happened with an administrator and agree to squash their beef.

B. The students involved are sent to ISS where they have an opportunity to talk about what happened and agree that they took things too far and shouldn't have fought.

Rather than simply punishing offenders, restorative practices hold students accountable for their actions by involving them in face to face encounters with the people they have harmed.
