Who was he?

  • Born into slavery in Virginia in the year 1800

  • Was violently anti-slavery after being a slave for his entire life

Who was he?

  • Born into slavery in Maryland in the year 1818

  • Was taught how to read by a white woman around the age of 7

  • Escaped from his plantation in 1838 at the age of 20

  • Settled in New York City as a free black man

Who was she?

  • Born into slavery in Maryland in the year 1822
  • Escaped from her plantation in 1849
  • Guided by The North Star, she reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by 1850

What did he do?

  • He started what is now known as Turner's Slave Rebellion

  • With over 70 other slaves, Nat Turner attacked his slave owners and other plantation owners
  • Killed over 50 white plantation owners and workers

  • As a result, over 200 blacks were executed or murdered by slave-supporting whites in Virginia

  • His revolt and others like it caused harsh laws to be enacted in Virginia known as the Slave Codes

What did he do?

  • Continued to learn how to read and write
  • Illegal to do so as a slave

  • Thought that gaining knowledge and an education would help him become free

What did she do?

  • Known as the Mother of the Underground Railroad
  • Guided thousands of escaped slaves to freedom in the North and in Canada

  • Nicknamed "Moses" by Frederick Douglass
  • Guiding her people to salvation like Moses in the Bible

  • Was even a spy during the Civil War for the North and lead slave revolts against southern plantation owners during the war!

  • White abolitionist from Connecticut

  • Began his career as a tanner, working with leather

  • Started to gain interest in abolition from Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth

  • Believed that the only way to get rid of slavery was through an armed insurrection

Sojourner Truth

What did he do?

  • John Brown and his followers attempted a raid against the National Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia
  • Wanted to steal guns to give to slaves

  • 1 U.S. marine was killed in the attack, 5 of Brown's followers died as well

  • John Brown was captured and convicted of murder as well as treason against Virginia
  • He was executed by hanging in 1859 in Charles Town, Virginia

  • Gained national attention, and was a major cause in beginning the Civil War

  • Abolitionist and women's rights activist

  • Born into slavery in New York State in 1797

  • Escaped slavery in 1826
  • NY banned slavery the following year

  • Friend of Garrison and Douglass
  • They helped spread her story in a famous book

  • Her book, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave, was widely read across the nation

  • "The Spirit calls me, and I must go"
  • Famous quote explaining that she must travel the country and preach abolition

  • "Ain't I a woman?"
  • Another famous quote saying that even though she was black, she was still a woman

  • Not only gained support for abolition, she also gained support for equal rights for women

  • A radical white abolitionist who pushed for immediate emancipation of slaves

  • A wealthy newspaper editor from Massachusetts

What did he do?

  • William Lloyd Garrison decided to put his writing skills to good use
