The Effects of Gender and the Presence of Others on
Sixty students at KPU were counted as they entered an English class. Women and men aged between eighteen to thirty years old. Also, two twenty-five year olds, male and female confederates, whom were also from Kwantlen Polytechnic University helped conduct this study.
On a Wednesday evening the observer sat outside two English classrooms and observed the subjects behavior when the confederates would drop their papers and books. The male confederate would drop papers while class was in session and only one subject was in the hallway, this process was repeated five times. Next, the confederate would drop papers twice after each of the classes concluded and the whole class was present. The observer would discretely record the percentage of subjects who helped the confederate pick up the papers and each of the subjects gender. This proccess was repeated two weeks later by the female confederate.
A folder full twenty papers and three books was used. The hallway was spacious to aid in the traffic for after classes. The observer placed a chair twenty feet away from the classroom behind lockers to discretely observe the subjects.
Prosocial behaviour is influenced by social norms and situational factors. Previous studies, such as the Kitty Genovese Case and Recylcing; The Concept of Norms, show how many factors such as gender, presence of others and norms affect prosocial behaviour.
Any action that is intended to help someone other than ourselves, such as sharing or cooperating.
The independent variables, which are the variables that are being manipulated, are the gender of the confederates and the number of people present. The dependent variable, which is the variable that is measured to see if it has been affected by the independent variable, is the willingness of whether the subjects chose to help the confederate or not.
If a female confederate drops her papers and books in a hallway during class, with only one other subject present, then that subject is more likely to help the female confederate by picking up the papers
Relation to Kitty Genovese Case and Recylcing; The Concept of Norms
The results of this study illustrates that gender has a strong influence on prosocial behavior, implying that women are more likely to receive help than males. The results also reveal that people are more likely to help others when other people are not present in the situation. Although there were some external factors that could have alterd the results of this study.
