Value Stream

Solution.

Using the T.I.M P. W.O.O.D system of waste management I evaluated each type and how we can reduce waste in the specimen distribution area.

The solution is also two sided. We are working with IT to have more information printed on the label and use technology and computers to our advantage. We are also working with the machine shop to provide locations of specimen removal for saw technicians. This will help us use time more efficiently and reduce errors.

Transportation. Motion.

People.

Current State: The receiving department is at the other end of the building and carts are used to transport samples from one end of the lab to the other several times a day.

Solution

We are currently working with supervisors and managers for a viable solution to separate receiving from shipping and use the current lab layout to combine with the order entry cell. This would greatly reduce the waiting, motion, and transportation waste we currently have. It would also reduce the under utilization of people by creating dual purpose positions.

Problem

Current State: Currently the specimen distribution area uses stamps and pens to mark the specimen bags with information and priorities.

This problem is two sided. We distribute the specimens too quickly, making more, faster and earlier then the saw department can handle. However we use useful time hand writing and stamping bags, which could be used for better value added steps.
