The KuKluxKlan in Germany

The First Klan 1866-1870s

William Woods Holden, the Governor of North Carolina, issued the militia to try and stop the Klan. As a result, the KKK was destroyed in South Carolina and all the other individual Klan groups began to decline across the South.

Former Confederate General George Gordon encouraged former Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford-Forrest to join the KKK. A few weeks later, Nathan Bedford-Forrest became elected as the Grand Wizard- the leader of the KKK.

The KKK attacked Republicans or those who supported Republicans prior to the presidential election. More than 2000 people were killed or wounded, and although many Republicans were counted before the murders, no Republicans voted during the election.

The KuKluxKlan was founded

The Ku Klux Klan publishes it's Organization and Principles. They claimed it to be a Christian, patriotic organization.

The KKK chased and hunted African- Americans through the woods, killing and wounding more than 200 African-Americans.

“In addition, in the early 2000s, many communities in the United States began to experiences a significant influx of immigrants, especially Hispanics, for the first time in their histories. A single-issue movement opposing immigration has helped create fear and anxiety about immigration in the minds of many Americans.”

Many Ku Klux Klan groups have tried to take advantage of that apprehension and insecurity, using anti-immigration outlooks for enrollment and propaganda ideas, and to catch the attention of public.

BARACK OBAMA

1950

In March of 2013, the KKK rallied in Memphis to fight against the renaming of three parks. The City Councils decision to change the names because it was unwelcoming towards the black population infuriated this group who deeply supported white supremacy. The parks were named after Confederate soldiers including Nathan Bedford – the first Grand Wizard.

Internal divisions, criminal behavior by leaders, and external opposition brought about a collapse in membership, which had dropped to about 30,000 by 1930. It finally faded away in the 1940s.

Members of the Ku Klux Klan were responsible for the bombing of the predominant black Baptist Church of 16th Street in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four little girls.

Although the Second Klan was the last major national Klan, there are still currently small groups who call themselves the KKK and continue on with their beliefs. After the 2008 Presidential elections, when Barack Obama became the President, the number of members in individual Klans began to increase considerably. But lately, the numbers have been starting to decrease because of the KKK's inadequacy with the Internet and violent history. Many individual KKK groups have began to form alliances with other white-supremacist groups like the Neo-Nazis to fight for "white power".

The KKK targeted both Americans and African-Americans for violation and for their moral lapses. The media started to attack the Klan for their "religious and racial intolerance", calling the Klan and its violence "un-American".

  • Klan membership reached its peak in the 1920s.
  • The Klan becomes more of a public organization
  • White American people throughout the country begin to form local Klan groups

The violence in the South that erupted due to the actions of the KKK led to the Great Migration. The Great Migration is when about 7 000 000 African-Americans left the South and moved to the North to avoid the violence and have a better life.

The Ku Klux Klan began reigns of terrors where they would go on bombing houses that were owned by African-Americans. This continued on for 10 years- until the 1950s.

Klan membership began to rapidly decline due to scandals of murders that made the KKK look incapable of handling law and order.

The second klan arose from an organization called the Knights of Mary Phagan which commemorated the lynching of Leo Frank (a Jew) who raped and murdered a young, white factory worker named Mary Phagan. This new clan was based on the beliefs against immigrants, Catholics, and Jews.
