Moa Pahe'e

By Kapono Benevides Jr. and Kaika Kamau

Materials

  • Moa (Wooden Darts)
  • 2 Stakes
  • A large field about 50 ft. long and 20 ft. wide

What Is The Pa'ani?

What Are The Mo'olelo Of The Pa'ani?

How do you pa'ani (process)?

  • Played with blunt shaped wooden darts called Moa.
  • Playing with Moa requires more skill than playing Ihe Pahe'e (Spear Sliding) because the torpedo shape of the dart makes it more difficult to handle and aim.
  • More advanced game of 'Ulu Maika.

Moa Pahe'e is used for warriors in the off-season. The skills that are learned are hand/eye coordination, precision, aim, and patience. Moa Pahe'e is a lot like 'Ulu Maika. The only difference is the Moa and the Stone.

1. Place 2 stakes 8-10" apart from each other.

2. Mark the throwing line 15-20 ft. away from the stakes (Distance may vary according to the level of proficiency).

3. Place your hand on the skinnier part of the Moa with your palm facing down.

4. Then bends your knees and slide the Moa while putting a spin on it so it throws.

5. Then wait until it goes through the 2 stakes.
