Gather Broadly

{Entries in Your NoodleBib Project}

1. Collect 2-3 articles covering different

sides of your issue.

2. Read and annotate them.

3. Ask yourself:

  • What are the issues within the issue?
  • What is at stake and who are the stakeholders?
  • What are the 2-3 major positions people are taking on my issue?

2b & 2c. Tentatively Commit & Think Narrowly

1. Narrow your focus to something specific

and concrete.

NOTE: HealthCare Reform is too broad a topic. But, if you wanted to address something specific, such as patients’ rights to free counseling regarding end-of-life care, that would be fine.

2. Produce a document of at least 2 pages

that explores the issue from multiple sides

and then provides your stance on the

subject.

You must include quotations.

This brief will be evaluated in

the following areas:

  • An explanation of the action choice or action decision
  • Third person, formal nonfiction essay voice and style
  • The strongest essays will incorporate a minimum of three sources
  • Follow MLA guidelines for parenthetical, in-text citation and a separate works cited page
  • NO introduction or conclusion
  • NO Transcendentalist's perspective

3a-3c. Detailed Plan for Intro, Body, Conclusion

  • This cannot be a five paragraph essay
  • Do not simply list subject heading
  • Do not write paragraphs

  • Consider Grabber, Organization, framework, clincher
  • Add phrases and clauses that indicate thinking and elaboration
  • Be certain each body section includes the complexity of your issue, in other words why different people may take different stances on your issue

4a: Draft Revised Essay

  • Generate a document explaining how Whitman/Thoreau would feel about your issue. What would the Transcendental perspective & solution be? A clear statement of the action Whitman/Thoreau would choose to take.

Make sure to include:

1. Your original thesis statement

2. How Whitman/Thoreau would view the issue, or how Whitman/

Thoreau would apply the course essential questions

3. The course of action Thoreau would advise

  • Quotations from the research to illustrate your issue and to explain the choice/decision
  • Quotations from the author’s writings to defend your inferences

4. Your revised thesis statement

4b: Revise & Edit

Leave your finished work; return later to polish and prepare for publication

Part V: Publish Your Knowledge

[4-6 Page Essay]

  • Revise and develop your original outline to include the ideas from your Revision Plan. Compose a five page essay that addresses the following prompt:

  • The Transcendentalists focused on Action from Principle, the idea that one’s actions should be based upon deeply held values and convictions. Identify a topic important to your world view, then explain your principled stance, and recommend an action one could take to address issue. The most advanced essays will incorporate an analytical framework based on a Transcendentalist view of this issue.
