Fluid Mechanics In Medicine

What is Fluid Mechanics?

Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids and how they behave when at rest and in movement. Part of fluid mechanics is fluid dynamics. Then, fluid dynamics is divided into two subsections; aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. Aerodynamics is the study of moving gases and hydrodynamics is the study of moving liquids.

Insulin Pump

Careers In Medicine

There are many careers that involves medicine:

This is what an insulin pump looks like.

  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Orthodontist
  • Surgeon
  • Nurse

When put on the body the insulin pump is located near the bellybutton.

Insulin is produced by the pancreas and acts like a key to let glucose into the cells for energy. But people who have type one diabetes has some trouble producing insulin so the body can use. but people with type one diabetes can just inject insulin 2 or 3 times a day or can just have an insulin pump to pump insulin into the blood stream when needed. Instead of always injecting a needle when a person needs insulin, the needle is attached to the 'infusion set'.

Insulin is liquid formed and is injected with needles.

Fluid Mechanics In Medicine

Fluid mechanics is also going through your body. Gas exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen is an example of fluid mechanics. Sometimes things can go wrong with your body and doctors can use medicine and treatments to help with the certain problems. For example, patients who have cancer go under chemotherapy to control tumors and people who easily create blood clots use blood thinners- which is a type of medicine -to maintain the flow of blood through the body.

This is fluid mechanics because it is studying the movement of medicine calculating around the body. this could be hydrodynamics or aerodynamics because it could be the study of gases and liquids.

Heparin is an example of blood thinners.

This is an example of how blood clots are formed.
