Gallaudet was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Yale University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1805, graduating at the age of seventeen,with highest honors, and then earned a master's degree at Yale in 1808. He wanted to do many things such as study law, engage in trade, or study theology. In 1814, Gallaudet became a preacher following his graduation from Andover Theological Seminary after a two-year course of study. Gallaudet's wish to become a professional minister .

In 1856, philanthropist and former United States Postmaster General Amos Kendall became aware of several deaf and blind children in Washington, D.C. who were not receiving proper care. Kendall had the courts declare the children to be his wards and donated 2 acres of his land to establish housing and a school for them.

  • Edward Miner Gallaudet was the first superintendent of the new school. Later, John Carlin suggested placing a monument of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet with Alice Cogswell.
  • In 1864, the 38th Congress authorized the Institution to grant and confirm college degrees. The collegiate department became known as the National Deaf-Mute College.
  • In 1857, the 34th Congress passed H.R. 806, which chartered the grammar school as the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind and funded tuition costs for indigent deaf, dumb, or blind children belonging to the District of Columbia.In 1865, the 38th Congress removed the instruction that the institution was to educate the blind, and renamed it the Columbia Institution for the instruction of the Deaf and Dumb.
  • In 1954, Congress amended the charter of the institution, changing the corporate name to Gallaudet College, which had been the official name of the collegiate department since 1894.
  • In 1986, Congress again amended the charter of the Institution, renaming it Gallaudet University

but his goals change when he met Alice Cogswell, on 25 May, the nine-year-old deaf daughter of a neighbor, Dr. Mason Cogswell. One day, as he observed her playing he started to teach Alice what different objects were and their names, teaching her words by writing them with a stick in the dirt. he decide to study methods for teaching deaf students.Gallaudet when to Paris to study the school's method of teaching the deaf using manual communication. Impressed with the manual method, Gallaudet studied teaching methodology under Sicard, learning sign language from Massieu and Clerc, who were both highly educated graduates of the school.

  • With the accompany of Clerc, Gallaudet sailed back to America. The two men toured New England and successfully raised private and public funds to found a school for deaf students in Hartford, which later became known as the American School for the Deaf. Young Alice was one of the first seven students in the United States. This is where his school began.
  • In 1821, he married one of his former students, Sophia Fowler. They had children as well.
  • Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet died in Hartford on September 10, 1851, aged 63, and was buried in Hartford's Cedar Hill Cemetery plot section 3. There is a residence hall named in his honor at nearby Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. There is also a residence hall named in his honor at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut.
