WHAT IS PEAT USED FOR?

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF PEAT ENERGY?

Do you think this energy source is good for our population? Why or why not?

Peat is used to create electricity and heat. Peat is used as an alternative to wood and other resources. Peat reduces our use of Fossil fuels therefore also reducing the amount of green house gases.

Cons:

- Expensive to produce

- Peatlands extraction rate is higher than is growth rate. (not by much)

- It adds carbon dioxide into the air to make and move it.

- Peat is only available in some countries

Pros:

- Lessons the use of fossil fuels

- Creates jobs to produce

- Peat is a good alternative to trees

- It has industrial importance to some countries.

- Renewable

PEAT ENERGY

WHAT IS PEAT?

WHERE DOES PEAT COME FROM?

Peat is a brown soil material consisting of decomposed vegetable matter. It is often cut and dried for gardening uses and for fuel. The peat is cut into square or rectangle shapes as shown in the pictures below.

Peat comes from peatlands also known as mires. Peatland ecosystems are very important as they are our number one carbon sink on the earth. Along with that, peatlands take a very long time to develop since the soil needs to be rich with organic matter. With just see this information you can infer just how valuable peatlands really are. Peatlands all together cover about 2% of global land area, containing about 8 billion terajoules of energy. Peatlands are the most common place to deposit peat but, peat is also deposited from other less common wetland types including fens, pocosins, and peat swamp forests.
