What Does The Future Look Like?

The Marine Corps has never really been very good with job security. But if you go into MEOP you are pretty much in until you retire or are discharged. If I were to get in, I am in for life.

How Can I Increase My Job Prospects?

Private lessons for your instrument and a healthy lifestyle are the best ways to increase your chances of obtaining and maintaining your job.

What are other options for me?

If I didn't manage to make it into the program I could choose one of the following:

  • Surgeon General- Requires a minimum of a bachelors
  • Combat Medic- Same as surgeon general
  • Band Instrument Repair Technician-Requires an MOS-5524 and a Band Instrument Repair course

How does this affect my well-being?

A job like this would challenge me and keep me interested. I would also remain healthy because i have to keep up a certain standard of physical health. It's something that I am passionate about.

MEOP:

Marines Musician Enlistment Option Program

What is MEOP?

By Caitlin Orozco

The Musician Enlistment Option Program is a program where you enlist as a musician in the Marine Corps band. You apply by sending in a clip of yourself playing, and if you are good enough you can obtain an audition. I, myself, plan on auditioning for a clarinet spot.

Transferable Skills

  • Discipline
  • Communication
  • Teamwork

Typical Duties

Requirements

The work environment is very intense and competitive. You have to be the best of the best not only out of the Marines physically, but also all the musicians. You have to be able to represent the United States Marine Corps as the best, because they are the best.

Typical Work Schedule

  • Traveling
  • Physical Training
  • Musical Training
  • Rifle Training
  • Performing
  • Become a Marine and apply for the musician program
  • Pass the Initial Strength Test (IST)
  • 12 weeks of recruitment training
  • Graduation from the Naval School of Music

Wages

  • 0800-0900: P.T
  • 0900-1200: Training
  • 1200-1400: Lunch Break
  • 1400-1700: Other occupation

Musicians make an average yearly salary of $30k a year depending on your rank, which does not really depend on the amount of years you have been serving. However, the military pays for most of your general living expenses, and this does not take into account what rank you are.

Promotions for a person in MEOP will happen three times in the first three months, then once after nine months, and another after nine months. this is quite a bit faster of a promotion rate than what you would generally experience, meaning you make a lot more money. However, after a while the promotions slow down and you have to be a lot more competitive, just as any other Marine would have to be.
