John Locke

and his major ideas

John Locke was a philosopher who believed in life, liberty, and property. He believed that a small government was the best thing for a country. He believed that the government should be making sure the citizens have their rights to property (and other things), and if the government fails to do this, then the citizens have the right to begin a rebellion. John Locke was a believer in the natural rights of man, and he believed that rights should be given or taken away.

Thomas Hobbes

and his major ideas

Thomas Hobbes believed that it was a smart choice to avoid war, and also that life in the nature as we now it is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. He also believed that because people were so mean, he thought that they needed an absolute monarchy to control them. Hobbes is also famous for writing the Leviathan .

What they have in common

  • They both were philosophers who theorized about the nature of humankind.
  • Hobbes looked at the world badly; life is short, and brutish.
  • Hobbes also believed that a strong, strict government is best.
  • Locke believed that every person is equally free.
  • They were both from England as well.
