Encoding

The process of turning sensory information

into information that can be interpreted by

the brain.

sensory memory

Storing

The information that is picked up by either sight or hearing (iconic or echoic). It is stored fot a very short time, being approximately 5 seconds. This is unconcious memory.

Holding information for some amount of time

Selective memory filter

Short Term memory

Maintenance rehearsal

A portal for important sensory information enter consciousness and be processed to become long-term memory. It generally spans 15-30 seconds of information, and then if not processed to long-term memory, is lost.

retrieving

Elaborative rehearsal

The process of recalling stored information. It is the most struggled with skill of the three.

Long-term memory

The system that keeps information more or less permanently. There are to many personal memories to hold on to all of them. Long lasting, and meaningful experiences are those that stay.

Procedural Memory

the knowledge of processes to complete habits

displays

Explicit Memory

Implicit Memory

Knowledge of habits

Somatic Memory

Episodic Memory

General knowledge

Events from one's life

Retrospective memory- memory from the past episodes/ events in one's life

vs. prospective memory- memory that makes sure we do something at a given time; ex. eat when hungry/ meal times

Memory

When one struggles with memory retreival

Physiology of Memory:

Anatomy of memory:

Short term memories in prefrontal cortex and temporal lobe

Memories of fear- amygdala

semantic and episodic memories- frontal and temporal tobes, though in different place than short term memories.

Long term-Hippocampus

neural circuitry

Biochemistry of memory.

Why do we forget?

Forgetting

Anterograde amnesia

Retrograde amnesia

encoding failure

proactive interference

retroactive inteference

Decay or disuse

Retrieval failure

How do you measuring forgetting?

The forgetting curve created by Hermann Ebbinghaus

What is repressed Memory?

Repression or motivated forgetting is the pushing back of memories that were unpleasant to hopefully end up forgetting them.
