By Anthony Stergiu

One difference is that the Zapotecs conquered others to get more tribute simply because they wanted to. On the other hand the Aztecs pretty much didn't have a choice due to the overpopulation and land that was difficult to farm.

The Zapotec, also known as the "Ben'Zaa" or "cloud people" was an indigenous civilization located in Mesoamerica more specifically, the Oaxaca Valley from around 500 BCE - 900 CE.

The Zapotec spoke a variant of the Oto-Zapotecan language. They praised gods based on human themes and natural events.

-Some of the most important gods were the Bat-god - the god of corn and fertility, Beydo - god of seeds and wind, Cocijo (who had a human body with jaguar and serpent features with a forked tongue) - the rain and lightning god, Pitao Cozobi - the corn god, Copijcha (symbolised by the macaw) - the god of the sun and war, Coquebila - god of the earth's centre, Huechaana - a mother goddess also associated with hunting and fishing, Kedo - god of justice, Ndan - the androgynous god of the oceans, Pixee Pecala the god of love, and Coqui Xee, The creator god who represented infinity.

- The population of the Zapotec reached approximately 25,000 people. Currently the Zapotec have between 800,000 to 1,000,000 persons. The Zapotec tried to build peaceful relationships with their neighbors, the Aztec and the Maya.

-There were Zapotec ambassadors at the Aztec court at Tenochtitlan, and Aztec ambassadors at the Zapotec court. But the Zapotecs and the Aztecs often fought wars anyway. They wore padded cotton armor. There was a big war between the Aztec and the Zapotec between 1497 and 1502, where the Aztec king Ahuizotl fought the Zapotec. The Zapotec king Cosijoeza still controlled his territory when the Spanish invaded Central America in the early 1500s. Who later waged war against the Zapotec aswell.

The Zapotec established a capital in the Monte Albán, a 400m plateau which was used as the economic, residential and ritual capital of the Zapotecs. Later the Zapotec moved into Milta, the eastern part of the Valley of Oaxaca. holding domination over the southern highlands, the Zapotec built the city on high ground, strategically placed to ensure that they can watch over the entirety of all three valleys. The Zapotec had trade connections with the Olmec civilization, which helped them build their own civilizations and expand.

Creation story

- The Zapotec creation story is called “Cozaana and Huichaana” and goes as follows: “The creators of the human race in Zapotec mythology. Cozaana, the god of hunting and the sun, was considered as the father of the Zapotec people and Huichaana, the goddess of water and the moon, was considered as their mother. In some myths, Huichaana gave birth to the first humans and in others, she created them from clay.”
