Mother's Death- 1825

Douglass arrives on Baltimore with new accompanies and a new master. He though this was a remarkable place for him to be. When he walks in they greet him very kindly, they treat him like no one has treated him before. Very soon after Douglass went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, Mrs. Auld started teaching Fredrick the A,B,C's and words of three or four letters. Mr. Auld found out about her teaching Douglass and forbade it. Douglass was treated very well in this new house. This was an important event because I think this is when Douglass really started to like reading and writing and could maybe think about learning more so that he could escape.

Frederick Douglass was tired of the way Mr. Covey was treating him. So, Miss Sandy gave him a root and she said that as long as he has it he will not be harmed. Douglass kept the root with him and when Mr. Covey approached him he was ready. Covey

tried to tie Douglass to the ground and then Frederick got a strong grip on his neck and fought back and Mr. Covey stopped. Douglass stopped the way that Mr. Covey had been treating him. I think that this was an important event because this is when Frederick Douglass found his self confidence on how to stand up for himself.

So, after Douglass gets caught and gets taken to jail, his old master Mr. Auld comes to the rescue. He wants to take Douglass back to Baltimore for him to work there. So they get to Baltimore, Douglass finds a job working to build a ship. When he is working on the boat he gets into a fight with some of the white men. he thought that since he had beaten up Mr. Covey he could beat them up. Wrong. They had handspikes and knives they used to take him to the ground. Then, they would give him several heel kicks and Douglass would get knocked out. This is not a good fresh start for Douglass. I think that this is an important part because this shows you how much bravery and self-confidence Frederick Douglass has built up over the years.

When Douglass was a little kid he was separated from his mom. He never really got to know his mom at all. Frederick only saw his mom four or five times during his childhood. His mother died when he was only seven years old. When his mother died it did not effect him because he never really got to know her. During her illness Douglass not allowed to be by her side. Douglass' mother died without him even knowing right when she died. I think that this was an important event because this part shows you how salves didn't get to know their family very well.

Douglass left Baltimore in March, 1832. He had lived in Baltimore for over 7 years. He was going to go to different plantation with a new master. The new master he was going to work for a man who goes by the name of Edward Covey. This is when Douglass went to leave for a new plantation. This was an important event because this is when Douglass would find his confidence in talking to his master and becoming more of a man.

Frederick Douglass and four of his slave friends were going to try to escape and run away to freedom. Douglass and the four slaves tried to escape. They made up this whole big plan and then, the plan failed. Frederick Douglass had failed to try to escape from slavery and go to freedom. This was probably not a good idea at this time because there were many guards that they had to try to get past. This was an important event because this shows you how hard it was to try to escape from slavery, it was not easy at all.

Douglass was sent to Baltimore to work for a different family. On the plantation he had not very much of anything. He hoped that this city would be a new start for him. That plantation that he was working he had been whipped and had seen other slaves being whipped. Douglass wanted this to much different, he hoped that he got clothes and more food. This would be a when Douglass would start his journey of becoming a man. I think that this was an important event because this is when Douglass would start becoming more of a man, than a slave.

Reflection

Douglass' Influence on Others

Reading narratives like Frederick Douglass is important because this he shows that when life throws an obstacle at you there is always a way around that obstacle. Like especially personal narratives like this are important to read because they show you how other people have big problems and they can still get through them. I personally learned from this narrative that a slave's life is really hard. There is not always an easy way out and you have to try to find one

I think that Frederick Douglass is a really good person to look off of for a good example. Douglass is always fighting for what is right. He never gave up. He just kept trying to get out of slavery and he finally made it and did something useful with his life. To me this shows how much courage and self-strength Fredrick Douglass has. Reading about Douglass' life will influence me to try even harder when life throws an obstacle at you. Douglass taught me that even when times get tough you have to be strong and fight through it.
