The cause of the disaster was a T-102 tower jamming up and not being handled properly. The site is a nitration site for aniline equipment, and when the explosions occurred an 80 km long toxic slick formed in the Songhua River. This was mostly made up of benzene and nitrobenzene, and it eventually ran through the Amur River.
This disaster may not have killed that many people, but over 10,000 people were forced to evacuate. It was a very large disaster that cost a lot of money to repair.
